Distorted reflection
Antonio Gutierrez
Antonio Gutierrez is a photographer who captures how water distorts people. He does this using different objects such as wine glasses, bottles and bowls and as well as this he shows distortion through bubbles. He uses a black and white filter in all his images to make them more simplistic and not draw attention away from the subject.
My Response
EXPLAIN THE AIM OF YOUR SHOOT HERE.
I have taken a variety of images with different styles. For the first images I filled up a paint palette with water and put a mirror in the water. Then I dropped ink in it creating a swirling effect. This created distortion. The rest of the images I decided I wanted to reflect people in different shaped jars and glasses because I wanted to see the way the shapes of the objects effected the reflection.

For this image I had to crop the background out and increase the contrast of it to make cal stand out from the background. To do this you press on the tab Image and then you press adjustments. This allows you to change the contrast and brightness of the photo.
Cropping my image made it better as my subject is centred in the image. Changing the brightness and contrast made certain features of Cal's stand out.
I also decided to see what this image would look like in black and white. This has a big impact on the image as it simplifies it and draws attention to the reflection and distortion.
For this image I got inspiration from Antonio Gutierrez as I used black and white as well as placing a glass object in front of cal.

GREAT SHOT AND EXCELLENT EDITING!
I edited this image by first cropping the image and then turning it into a black and white picture because I wanted to copy the style Antonio Gutierrz's photographs
WWW: Her features are enlarged
EBI: The table was cropped out of the image
EBI: The table was cropped out of the image
Overall I am pleased with the way these photographs turned out as they were able to copy the style of images this project was influenced by. My favorite photo is image No.2. This is because it enlarges some of cal's facial features in the glass of water. To develop this I could turn image No.2 into black and white to mirror Gutierrez's photos.
Reshoot
WHY DID YOU DO A RE-SHOOT? WHAT WERE YOU TRYING TO ACHIEVE?
I decided to do a re-shoot to develop my ideas further and experimenting using different things to distort my images.
For this image I captured Daphne's face in a cracked mirror. I edited this by cropping it to get rid of some of the background and then I modified the brightness and volume to where I wanted it.
WWW: The cracked mirror added an interesting element as it helped increase the distortion
EBI: I made sure it was less pixelated

Improved 2
For this image I used Lois as my subject. I made her stand over a cracked mirror and I then put water on it. I edited this image in two different styles. For improvement 1 I rotated the image 180 degrees and the played around with the contrast and brightness, however like the image above I think it turned too yellow. For improvement 2 I created a black and white image like Antonio Gutierrez.

Reflection in mirrors
Sebastian Magnani was born in a small mountain village in Switzerland in 1985. He discovered his passion for photography whilst training as a media designer in 2006 and in 2011 he decided to pursue photography as a career.
Magnani is self employed and works on various subjects and some personal projects like the 'Underdogs' and 'Undercats'. From this he got lots of media attention. Another famous project Magnani worked on was called 'Reflections'. In this project he has decided that instead of taking photographs of his subject straight on, he has taken photos of its reflection in a circular mirror. He puts the mirror on different backgrounds which allows us to see the contrast between the ground and the sky above.
I specifically like his work on 'Reflections' because it is very interesting to look and there are many intricate details in these photos. I also like the way the background and the reflections are so different however complement each other perfectly. As well as this, they both make the other stand out.
I will use Sebastian Magnani's work to influence my own by finding contrasting backgrounds and reflections. Like the images in his series I will also make sure the reflection contains an interesting and colourful subject whether it be branches of trees, or clouds in a blue sky.

This image is my favorite from Magnani's reflection series. The central part of the image is smooth, a perfect circle, bright and mainly blue and pink. This creates an idyllic scene. Contrasting this is the background of the picture, which acts as a frame to the perfect central image. The background is choppy, darker, less ordered and less tame, it shows an unedited version of nature. This image could be a metaphor for real life - we portray a flawless version of ourselves, when the reality is something less than perfect and often very messy.

My Response

My aim for this shoot was to take inspiration from Sebastian Magnani's work and create my own.
These Images were not successful because the aperture was not high enough meaning my pictures turned out to dark. In the future I will do re-shoot of this project making sure the aperture is increased.
Re-shoot
YOU HAVEN'T ANALYSED THE FIRST SHOOT AND YOU'VE ALREADY MOVED ON TO A RE-SHOOT. PLEASE ANALYSE THE FIRST SHOOT AND EXPLAIN WHY YOU'VE RE-SHOT THIS PROJECT.
My intention for this shoot is to learn from the mistakes I made in the first shoot and improve them
This is the weakest photo I have taken for this re-shoot because It is slightly blurry, the mirror is dirty, there are objects on the mirror and the background is dull. To improve this image I would make sure I cleaned the mirror, then positioned it in a more interesting place and make sure it is in focus.
I think the following images are an improvement of this first one. Tamara Lorenz- Reflection of Colour
Tamara Lorenz is a German artist who creates constructions and then photographs them. She manages to captures the images abstract properties. The lines, vibrant colours, textures and tones provide contrast in the picture.

This is one of my favourite images of Tamara Lorenz's. I like it as the dark reds complement the bright yellows. I find it really interesting that she has managed to 2D materials appear in 3D. It is extremely simplistic but very captivating.
My response
Our aim for this task was to take inspiration from Tamara Lorenz, creating interesting abstract pictures using coloured paper. For my image I cut out lots of different shapes and played around with their spacing on the paper until I liked the arrangement.

Tim Walker, Wonderful Things Exhibition
Last year we went on a school trip to take a look at Tim Walker's exhibition at the V&A to help inspire us for our reflection project.
In the first room there were over 100 photographs from a range of Walker's projects making it easy for people to gain a good impression of his work. The photographs were separated into different themes. These themes were fashion, fantasy, portraits and nature. He also had a section on his muses, he specifically likes taking photos of Tilda Swinton as she brings new ideas to his pictures.
Walker's second room contained photographic projects inspired by objects from V&A's collection. Walker said he thought the V&A was "the most inspiring place in the world... Many of the objects that I saw during my research at the museum made my heart swell and I wanted to try to create a photograph that would relate not only to the physical presence of beauty of that object, but also to my emotional reaction to it... Each new shoot is a love letter to an object from V&A collection, and an attempt to capture my encounter with the sublime."
My favorite room was based if dreams and fantasy. It was a pink room playing soft music and contained fantastical pictures. He uses the room to reflect the idea of a scrapbook or diary, a private world. It suggests a world in which you can safely be whoever you want. When standing in this room you feel like you're a part of the fantasy. Tim Walker has created this feeling as the room is in a completely different style to the others which makes you feel as if you've walked into an alternate world
The whole gallery was designed by Shona Heath, walkers long term collaborator. Its made to feel as if you are part of Tim Walker's shoots. In the gallery there are different room all dedicated to a different themes. The rooms had contrasting colors, some were bright and blinding and others were dark. In each room there were different aesthetics and music and he had unique ways of presenting his work.
Three strands
Reflection in spheres- Phil Dolby
The photo furtherest to the left is my favourite because its perfectly placed on what looks like a rock, overlooking the sea. The water reflects the sunset in the glass sphere.

Reflection in eyes- Mogan Andrei
Mogan Andrei is a 26 year old photographer, he worked on a project called 'Look into my eyes' and took a series of images showing the different patterns and colour variations inside hundreds of peoples eyes. He spends approximately 10 minutes on each eye making sure his images are perfect and takes them with a special macro lens to pick up fine detail. He has taken photos of around 300 people's eyes and has said when being interviewed by the Daily Mail that:
'It's not always easy to take a perfect photograph straight away, as people sometimes blink as I click the camera, so I have to be patient and try to stay as focussed as possible.'
'It's not always easy to take a perfect photograph straight away, as people sometimes blink as I click the camera, so I have to be patient and try to stay as focussed as possible.'
Out of Andrei's images this one is my favourite. The macro lens has picked up the texture in the iris and and you are able to see the eye in detail with almost the whole image in focus. It has also succeed in reflecting the camera lens in the pupil and the subjects eyelashes in the eye.
Reflection of generations- Tom Hussey
Tom Hussey is a portrait photographer who shot a series of photos called 'reflection'. This shows elderly people in front of a mirror, their younger selves looking back at them. Hussey takes photos of his subjects completing everyday tasks and uses a wide angle perspective so we are able to explore the background of these images. Through this we are able to get to know the subjects better and learn what they hold important to them. He also used a tripod when taking this series so that the elderly subject is at the same angle as their younger self and they are both at eye level
Hussey got this idea from a WW2 veteran who said “I can’t believe I am going to be 80, I feel like I just came back from the war. I look into the mirror and I see this old guy.”

This is my favourite image as I like black and white style. The young man in the image is slightly blurred giving an effect that it is in the old mans memory and the young man is smiling through the mirror which creates the heartwarming affect that he is proud of the person he's become. The wide angle perspective allows us to see various photos stuck to the mirror, one includes a man in a war uniform, by placing it here he is going to see it everyday which shows that he is really proud of this and doesn't want to forget the person he once was.
My response
My aim for this shoot is to take inspiration from Tom Hussey and create my own images in this style.
Final photos
For these images I had to use photoshop. For this image I got my nan and sister to stand in the same place and both look into the same mirror. Then individually I took photos of them. I went into photoshop and selected the two best photographs. I decided to use my sister's reflection and my grandmas face looking at the mirror. After choosing my photos I had to create two separate layers, the one with my sister being the first. Then, I had to change the opacity so I was able to see both images and I erased the part of the first image where my sister was standing so that it revealed my Nan. To change the reflection to black and white I had to use the quick selection tool to select everything inside the mirror and then create a new layer with only that. I went to Image>Adjustments>black and white and played around with the settings until I liked how it looked.
WWW: I managed to use photoshop successfully to create an interesting image that clearly shows reflection of generation
EBI: Next time I need to make sure to carefully erase the top image so that the edges don't look rough around my subject and I want to try and take wider shots, like Tom Hussey, to show more of the background and make the image more exciting.

I think this image worked better than the last one. Again I used my Nan and sister. I used photoshop however I tried a different technique. I selected two photos and used the quick selection tool on the image of my sister to select and copy the whole mirror. I then copied and pasted it onto my first image over the mirror reflecting my Nan, enlarging it so it would cover it completely. I had to use an erasing tool to make the frame of the image more sharp using a very small setting. This technique was a lot simpler. I also went to Image<Adjustments<Colour balance to tone down the reds in this image and make it look more natural.
WWW: I managed to find a simpler technique to create a photo that reflects reflection of generation
EBI: Next time I would experiment with making parts of the photo black and white and also I would try and capture different facial expressions to make it more exciting.

This image was just an experiment. I wanted to see what it would look like to have all her emotions surrounding her neutral face ti reflect all the emotions people conceal from other people.
To create this image I used the original photo above and then used the quick select tool again to copy each individual images onto the original. I then had to move the images around until I liked where they were placed.

Further edit the last image you've displayed in the Sebastian Magnani-inspired photos section. Think about the overall composition - are the margins of the ground the same size? Using the crop tool, edit this image so you have symmetry on all sides of the photo - I'm only suggesting this because it is a rectangular image.
I want you to go into yours and edit - Crop the image several times so you end up with several compositions and then rearrange them so you're creating a completely new composition using the paper cuts you've made.

Remove the red colour from your final images that you currently have in the images with your grandmother in the mirror.
I like the different ideas that you've created of your grandmother and sister. I think it would be really great if you could do an entirely new or couple of new shoots in a different location using daylight - right now, your images are a bit pixelated. By using daylight - even with an open window and you lower the ISO to 200, you'll get less grain/pixels in your images and the final results will be much better quality. Use different locations and maybe even different subjects, in order to convey these concepts.
