Yowa Yowa
In 2011, Yowa Yowa also known as Natsumi Hayashi had been creating a self portrait diary project which she had been updating on a daily basis. She took photos of herself carrying out mundane tasks, however with a twist she was levitating. Her photos featured many different facial expressions and poses . She created the levitating effect by setting the camera to take a photo at the height of her jump. To create a series of levitation photos Yowa Yowa would need to set her camera on a high shutter speed so she would not appear blurry. This photographer claims the reason why she did this project was because “I wanted to express myself as an honest person ‘whose feet are not firmly planted on the ground’ by shooting myself being free of the gravity of the Earth,” - an interview with the New York Times.
I think Yowa Yowa's photos were very successful as her facial expressions do not give away the fact that she is jumping. I like her photos because the illusion that she is levitating is never broken and it looks very magical.

My Response
Our task was to take a series of pictures that demonstrate levitation. To take a successful levitation shot we had to set our camera to a fast shutter speed of around 1/250 (or higher if your camera lets you). The trick was to jump but not let it appear as if you are jumping. To do this you had to tie up long hair, take off accessories that would fly up and tuck in loose clothing.
Zoom Blur
Zoom blur is a technique of taking photos where it appears as if it is moving. To do the zoom blur affect you have to focus your camera on a still person or object and use a slow shutter speed as you zoom in our out on your focus point. To stop additional movement it is best to have your camera on a tripod and to stop over exposure you need to put your ISO on a low setting.
In my photos ISO was set to 100, shutter speed 1/4 of a second and aperture was F5.0 or F3.5
WWW:Image 2 worked really well and you can see the illusion of movement really well
EBI: Image 5 was unsuccessful as the camera what shaky. Next time I will try and keep the camera steadier.

Francesca Woodman
Francesca Woodman was born on the 3rd of April 1958 in America and died on January 19th, 1981 at just 23 years old because she committed suicide. She started photography at a very early age and this was probably because her parents were both artists. She then went on to study at rhode island school of design. Her photos were influenced by symbolism, surrealism and rock painting, specifically she was inspired by the artist Duane Michels.
Key word: Blurred, self portrait, ghosts, surrealism, distortion, surroundings
Woodman's intentions: Explores issues of gender and self, creates unsettling, claustrophobic and surreal scenarios, the pictures have a ghostly feel to them and allows her body to be defined by the viewer Wider issues the artist is addressing: Gender and sexuality, feminism, corruption and social injustice, representations of the body, death and showing that photographs never offer the whole truth. |
Analysis of the photo: This black and white photo is a self portrait taken by Francesca Woodman. In this image Woodman is wearing a dark dress and ankle boots. she is bending over something. she has used a slow shutter speed to make her figure distorted.
I think in this photo Francesca Woodman intended to create ghostly imagery, She did this by photographing blurred movement. She wanted us to consider distortion. Francesca Woodman, using this image was trying to get us to consider disturbing psychological states. This is shown through her use of the figure moving in a chaotic way. In my option i think in this piece of work she was exploring her own mental state and creating awareness. Woodman has used long exposure to create an eerie and creepy atmosphere as her body is distorted. |

I think my photos are successful in capturing Francesca Woodman's style as the black and white create a strange, unnerving scene and the blurred movement makes things appear disfigured.
Romain Laurent
Romain Laurent was born in 1983 and studied design in Paris at uni. From 2006 onwards he has been working as a freelance photographer in the French capital. He is famous for many photographic works including his personal projects tilt and GIFS. He came up with the theme of tilt when he became dizzy one day. He said it felt like the whole world was tilted and he was the only one upright. His GIFS show one feature in the photo moving while everything else is still is does this using the same technique of stop movement animations.
I like these photos because they are unique and interesting. The movement tells the story of whats going on in the image and makes the observer feel involved in the image.

My GIFS
In response to Romain Laurent's work we created GIFs. To make this we had to take a series of chronological photos of just the head or the head and the torso of the model, moving one part of the body while everything else is still. It was a difficult project as you didn't know how much to move the subject for each picture, however I enjoyed it as it let us be creative in what we chose to do. After this we uploaded the series of images onto photoshop and put them into layers.
WWW:I think image 1 was a successful GIF as it has the same focal point and the photos have a chronological order.
EBI:Image 2 didn't work so well so next time I would make sure my subjects facial expressions stayed the same.

Light Trails
The goal of this project was to have a set of clear images drawn with torches and other forms of light. I needed to have a particularly dark background in order for the light sources to really project into the camera lens, however the classroom wasn't very dark. So when the shutter was open for a long time, for the drawing to be complete, it also let in a lot of surrounding light. This project definitely improved when using the dark room as the surrounding area wasn't seen.

These photos were much more effective than the ones done in the classroom as the light did not enter the camera lens and the surrounding area remains unseen.
My Favourite Photo
This is my favourite photo because it shows the smiley face very clearly and gives off a positive vibe. It is successful in showing the light rays very well.
Michael Bossanko
I think Michael Bossanko intentions are to connect to nature and the environment. He does this by having a long exposure. He takes his photos at night with a team of people drawing an image using light. I think Michael Bassanko wants us to create a feeling of life in his light movement pictures. He does this by having one main thing in his photograph to draw attention to the image.
Traveling without moving GIF
In this project the aim was to make the subject appear like they were moving without them taking a step. To do this the person had to take a tiny step in each frame and the camera would have to move back with it, thus creating an even space between the two in each scene.
Creating the travelling without moving GIF
Creating the Light Trail GIF
The final outcome
Light trail GIFIn this GIF I wanted to create an interesting animation to amuse the viewer. The concept of this GIF is a man being caught in a storm struck by lightening however my one concern is that this idea isn't projected clearly in these light trails. If I did this again I would make sure I had a clear idea of what I wanted my light trails to look like coming into the classroom so I could dictate the way they come out.
|
Travelling without moving GIFThe goal of this GIF was to portray the idea of movement, however I am quite disappointed in the outcome as it doesn't really work. The images are not consecutive creating jumps in the animation. If I was to do this again I would make sure to use a tripod as some of my images are at different angles as a result of me taking these photos with my hands.

Movement Development - Final Piece
For my final movement project I have selected the light GIF as when we did this in class it didn't really work. The artist which inspired this project was Micheal Bossanko who created magical light images with torches and other light sources. The concept for my GIF of a stick man who's hand is moving in front of his face. Every time he moves his hand away he shows different expression. I wanted to portray the different emotions people experience on a day to day basis. In order to create a GIF where the light clearly showed I had to make sure I took the images in a pitch black location- my hallway. The people who made my image come to life were my sister and my mom who drew the image and made sure they followed a chronological order so that the images when put together made a small animation. My photographs created a good contrast between light and dark however because the torch I used was so bright that the background came out lighter than I intended.
